Best Backpacks for School: VTech V Reader Animated E Book System

VTech V Reader Animated E Book System

I got a v.reader for my kid who was 21 mo at the time and nine months later it is still one of his favorite toys. He plays with it almost every day. I always hesitate to judge educational value of toys and am suspect towards such claims, but this one has proven to have it. My 2 yr old knows capital and small letter, colors, shapes, punctuation, some Spanish words (from Dora) and French ballet terms (from Olivia). "What happened" games have thought him to learn to think about stories and articulate simple explanations, so now he frequently tells me what happened in books and cartoons. I saw some reviews about technical problems with this toy, but we have been lucky and we have not experienced any even issues and though the toy was dropped many, many times, it is still as new. We have the older version with a larger screen which may be more durable than the new one (which also has a small screen). I would recommend buying rechargeable batteries though, because regular ones will last only several hours of play.

  1. I got this for my three year old granddaughter and she absolutely loves it. It is extremely easy for her to use and she never leaves home without it. She sits with her one year old sister and reads to her. It's teaching her the love of books.

We got this for our 3.25 old daughter. We bought a cartridge for 5-7 year olds. We downloaded several titles. So far she has used it daily for quite awhilte each day. The reports you get on progress are neat and informative. It appears durable, as I dropped it off the highchair on a hard floor and no issues. Batteries seem to last for 1 day. I spent $20 on 8 rechargable batteries and a charger. This is a great way to get here prepared for preschool and she is know very interest in reading words. cartiridges seem a bit high in price. We got her a leapster 2 at the same time, and at her age, she definately prefers this much more, perhaps that will change as she gets older, but for now, this was a smart investment and well worth the money.

My daughter recived this as a Christmas gift when she was 2 and she's now 4 and we've never had an electronic issue. We are however going to buy her a new because the one she has now has been stepped on thrown down over and over again and its been a trooper through it all, but recently her little brother spilled water on it and it's just not working, but she's really getting into it and understanding the games and stories; I will say I think it's a toy for at lest 3 1/2yr. old and up, any younger and they won't totally be able to enjoy it as much as you'll spend on it.

Knowing my 3 1/2 year old niece I knew it would be difficult to find any sort of educational tool that would keep her interest for longer than 5 minutes. Turns out the V Reader was a great find! She loves her V Reader, takes it every where with her and has to show everyone the "movies" that her new "computer" plays. I don't think she's quite old enough to catch on to the reading piece of the V Reader but it is increasing her vocabulary. The stories are longer than I expected and she watches numerous books in one sitting (quite a feat for her). One feature I personally enjoyed was the V Reader website where you can download additional books at a much lower cost than the cartridges (keep in mind these do not come with the games that the cartridges do but it's great for my niece because she's more into the books than the games right now). I would recommend this for anyone who would like to introduce their child to reading in a fun, interactive environment. I don't see it being an incredible learning tool but it's a great introduction to reading. My one word of caution is to buy the DC adapter, she went through three sets of batteries in two days. Also, if you plan on using the website to download additional books be sure to pick up a SD card.

We got this for my daughter and she absolutely loves it...it's one of the few things that holds her attention and is extremely easy for her to use. I was going to write a glowing review, but let me leave you with this: this morning, while getting breakfast ready, I asked her if she wanted to watch playhouse disney, her answer, "no I wanna use my book reader." That should be a good enough review for any parent...by the way, this doesn't eat batteries as quickly as many of the reviews say, another bonus.

We were taking a trip to Central America and I wanted to get my 3 1/2 year old a new toy to keep her busy on the 6 hour flight. We had seen the vreader at Target and she always wanted to stop and play with it. She LOVED this toy. I really didn't like the idea of having to buy cartridges for each story, but there really isn't any other option for kid's e-readers. I bought her the vreader and 3 of the story cartridges to go along with it. We purchased Dora, The Little Engine That Could and Mr. Messy and the Missing Sock. What I like best about the vreader is you also have the option of buying an SD card and going on the vtech website to download books. The purchase of the vreader gave you 6 coins you could use to redeem 6 downloadable books. Loading the 6 books could not have been easier. Put the SD card in the slot in the back of the vreader by the batteries, hook up the mini USB cord (comes with the vreader) chose the books on the vtech website to download and a couple minutes later the books are on the SD card and ready to go. There are about 10 downloadable books available right now on the vtech website, including Seasame Street character books, although you may not use the free coins vtech gives you with the purchase of the vreader to download these books. Vtech says it will be adding more books soon.

This toy did reasonably well on battery life. The batteries lasted approximately 6-8 hours of non-stop play if you keep the backlight on the low setting. If you keep it on the brightest setting, the batteries only last about 2 hours. You can also purchase a AC adapter and a car plug instead of running on batteries. The vreader does not have a rechargeable battery like a Kindle. This is probably it's biggest drawback.

The vreader operates by touch screen with ease. The vreader comes with a stylus, but my daughter does not use it. She simply touches the screen with her fingers and has not had any problems working the book in this manner.

I love that the story comes with games as well. A lot of reading comprehension games, vocabulary and spelling games as well. I had fun playing the games with my daughter. She has a Leapster, but this holds her attention a lot more then that ever has. I would recommend this e-reader to anyone who has pre-school aged children. It is a wonderful, fun, and educational toy.

  8. I'm so pleased with this 'toy' and my 4 year old granddaughter loves her 'reader' - although she still wants to play with the iphone. There are many different activities to do. We only have the one story that came with the reader, but we're excited to start building a library!
